It can be hard to see the forest for the trees when pursuing a search engine optimization campaign. The following are useful tidbits I have found over the years that will help you achieve results.
1. Optimize All Pages – To the extent possible, try to optimize all pages of your site, not just the home page. Your goal is to push all the pages up in the rankings to draw traffic, not just the home page.
2. Daily Fresh Content – If you want to make the search engines sit up and notice you, add a daily tip to your site. Use automated software to preload the tips.
3. Mellow November – The online holiday shopping season is huge for most sites. Being wicked, Google and Yahoo usually do a big ranking update in early November. Don’t mess with your site during this period or you could regret it.
4. How Long Till Rankings – Depends on the phrases you are going for. In general, you can count on a year in Google and less for Yahoo and MSN with a new site. MSN always produces high rankings first.
5. Avoid Rash Actions – Most forms of internet marketing take time to play themselves out. Don’t act rashly and make changes every few days. You will never find success.
6. Finding Freelance Writers – if you are hunting for freelance writers, try using Elance or RentaCoder. Alternatively, you can try posting on the article directories that have forums.
7. Keyword Research Common Sense – When doing keyword research, don’t leave your common sense at the door. Think about what phrases you would use to search for something and make sure to incorporate them in your site.
8. Black Hat Optimization – Black hat optimization refers to finding some trick to get rankings. Sounds good until the ranking process changes and you lose all your rankings. Be patient and go for long term, stable rankings.
9. The Keyword Box – When developing keyword lists for your optimization efforts, try to think beyond the subject matter of the site. Throw in catch all phrases such as “problems”, “gifts” and so on as appropriate.
10. Most Important Search Engines – The most important search engines are Google, Yahoo and MSN in that order. Why? The control the most searches on the web. Search engines like Alta Vista are irrelevant.
When playing with your optimization efforts, remember to factor in time. Simply put, you need to give the changes time to be digested by the search engines. Making weekly changes isn’t going to tell you anything.

Q: Jason, what is Web 2.0 all about?
JASON: Well, most people think it’s about AJAX, DHTML, Dynamic websites, Social Networking, things like that. But those are all byproducts of Web 2.0, not what it really is.
Web 2.0 is more of a paradigm shift – a change from “pushing†websites and content to visitors into “pulling†the content from them. Internet surfers don’t necessarily want to be just given information, but instead are looking for sites that allow them to participate. They want to get information from other people like themselves while making friends, forming relationships, and building a community. That’s Web 2.0 – and so many people are missing the boat.
Q: So static content sites are on the way out?
JASON: Nope, I don’t mean that, because content sites will always have a place on the web. Not all visitors are going to want to contribute, many will still just be looking for an answer to their question, or information on their topic. But why not let another one of your visitors give them that information?
Q: Ok, so how can Internet Marketers and webmasters take advantage of this on their websites?
JASON: In a number of ways, actually. But the easiest way is to give your users the opportunity to contribute to your site somehow. Put up a forum, or give them the ability to blog on your site, or throw up a blog and encourage them to comment, etc etc etc. Honestly, people like to tell people their opinions, and they’re generally willing to put those opinions out there for people to read.
Q: Is it really that easy? “Put up a forum�
JASON: Haha, no. If you don’t have traffic to your site, you won’t be successful in getting your visitors to post and spend time there.
Q: So no “If you build it, they will come?â€
JASON: Nope – that hasn’t worked since the mid 90s. Actually, I created my first affiliate site in 2001, and I thought that all I had to do was put up a site and people would just come to it. After about a month of work to get the site up (it was a sweet site, or so I thought) it took me about a week to realize that it was a bomb – big time – because I didn’t have any traffic. Then, I launched another site, and concentrated on getting people to it through any means that I could, and that’s when I started to see success with it. When I got people to 1) come to my site, and 2) keep coming back to it. Coincidentally, that site went down within a few months because my hosting company at the time had a bandwidth limit and no way to upgrade the account, so they shut my site down when I hit that threshold. My lesson: make sure your hosting company will grow with your site
Q: Ok, then how do you recommend getting people to come to your site?
JASON: That’s an entire course in and of itself, and there are plenty of courses out there on it, but I’m a BIG fan of article marketing. But there are tons of ways to drive traffic – SEO, articles, AdWords, email lists, forum marketing, email signatures, JVs, and on and on and on…
But the REAL biggie is how to keep your visitors coming back! You don’t want to do all that work to get tons of traffic to your site just to have them give it a once over and then leave, never to return, do you? Nah, that’s leaving money on the table! So how do you keep people coming back? Give them a reason to. Plain and simple. If your site is an affiliate site, or a content site, or a plain old blog, you NEED to give them something to make them want to one, be there, and two, come back for more. My suggestion on doing it? Turn your site into a user-driven ratings/review site.
Q: Great advice. Any chance a ratings site will help with bringing new people in, too?
JASON: Well, I can’t say this 100% for sure, because I haven’t thoroughly tested it, but I’ve been noticing a HUGE upswing of reviews and review sites in the top 10 pages of Google. Any time I search for any kind of product, I almost immediately see a review listed in the top 10, frequently in the top 5! Now, that may just be coincidence, so take it with a grain of salt, but if other people’s review sites are making the top 10, can’t yours?
Q: Haha, well said. If I’m right, you just launched a script that allows you to easily create user-generated review sites, didn’t you?
JASON: Why else would I be raving about them? Just kidding – Yes, I did just release a Wordpress plugin that turns your blog into a Web 2.0 review machine. But this isn’t one of those “Hey, maybe this will sell well… I’ll create it and sell it to all these suckers†(actually, none of my products are) – I created it to run my own review sites and drive more profits. I created it as an income source, and it turned out very well.
As I was creating it, I wondered if anyone else could make use of it. And I kid you not, the first 10 people I talked to about it thought it was AWESOME and they wanted to get their hands on it ASAP! I almost flipped – I only mentioned in in passing most of the time, and it quickly became the topic of conversation. I actually had to push up the launch because people were emailing me and almost begging me to release it. So I did
Q: What’s so good about this product? Why should I use it?
JASON: Well, first of all, it’s easy to use – it runs on Wordpress, so it’s VERY easy to get set up. For those who aren’t very technological, or experienced with Wordpress, there are full, step-by-step help videos.
Second, with the intrinsic Wordpress spam filtering, you don’t have to worry about getting your ratings site spammed like crazy from random spam bots.
But the most important thing is that it enables your visitors to give their opinion on products, ideas, blog posts, or whatever you want them to rate! You can use it for affiliate products, your own products, your rants and ramblings, ideas, blog posts, anything – so you’re not limited on how you can use it. And we all know how much people like to give their opinions, so you shouldn’t be short on user generated content for the search engines to eat up and keep the traffic coming.

Domain Name – Get It Before You Start

Choosing the right domain name can be critical to the success of your website and business flourishing. Your domain name should be a key to your web site. Most Internet users remember websites by their domain names; the rule of thumb is that when people think of your web site, they’ll think it by name. If your name is also your URL, they’ll automatically know where to go.
You should have a domain name, which sounds solid to the core values and ethics of your business. It should also reflect the personality of your target customer. Make the combination the words that are memorable and should not be confused. Try to register the identical name that your customers and visitors will associate with your Website. you have to keep in mind that people need to be able to remember it, and easily type it into their browser.
Here a question arises if one can not get the same domain name as per expecting website name. One may also add suffix to the name. This strategy may cause confusion. One might attempt to access a web site missing suffix.
Your domain name can also affect the anchor text of inbound links; and your ranking in search engines. So try to have a very much relevant domain name.
The other way is lookup with “whois†and have the domain owner information to motivate them to sell the domain name. The other option, that is followed commonly to purchase a domain name first and then naming your website the same as your domain posses.
Your brand name could be the first word visitors will type in search engines and it would be the easiest name for them to remember, so you should use your business name or brand name. For example use www.handbags.com.
How long should I make my domain name? Technically a domain can be up to 67 characters. But it is universally accepted that short names are better for a number of reasons. 1) They are Easier to remember. 2) They are less susceptible to mistake. 3) They are good for online or offline marketing. 4) They are visually pleasing.
Adverse to the above, advantages of long domain names cannot be ignored. Search engines explore it because of the Long domain name having the keywords to the web site.
A similar setback is whether to choose .com, .net or.org etc. Many people not obtaining .com domain but they can have .net, .org or other country specific top level domain such as us, lv, or co.uk. People get simply confused whether they should go with one of these available extensions or not.
If your website is aimed at people in a specific country, having a country-specific domain, visitors will recognize right away that the business has a presence in the country of the extension. They might comfortable to buy. Some country-specific search results include sites with the relevant country-specific domain extension even if the site isn’t hosted in that country.
In spite of this, country specific domain could work against. Especially the case when you are promoting your business in international market. People from international market may be less inclined to buy if the business looks foreign to them.
How ever, for international visitor .net or .org or any other country specific extension works also well. Still this might others to mislead that you are promoting your brand to that particular country only.
A school of thought found that “.net†and “.org†are equally acceptable. Actually “.org†extension was intended for non-profit making organizations.
As far as I am concern, .com extension is for commercial web sites that have adopted all over the world and still the most sought after. In some circumstances we can use another domain extension like .info, intended for informational portals.
Thus there exist many good arguments for accepting other extension when you go with the need of a particular name and unable to get “.com†extension other extensions are equally acceptable.
Now let me reiterate the case in a glance that is “Get the name registered before naming your website.â€
